About the Curator
There's a system that wants to flatten everything. Algorithms designed to predict you, platforms built to monetize your attention, culture reduced to engagement metrics. It's winning. It will probably keep winning.
But there's also a pattern in history. In every era, there are those who refuse to surrender to the prevailing way of thinking through small acts of rebellion. From Socrates to Bourdain, there have always been people willing to forge their own path, not because they think they'll win, but because they refuse to live any other way.
Currently living in this system is James. He's one of them, well he’s trying to be. Those bills still need to be paid so he’s still running the rat race. He knows a man alone cannot change the entire world. But given his choice of hills, this is the one he has chosen to die on.
He started Steep as an act of war against a system he cannot defeat. Against algorithms that mistake engagement for relevance. Against culture flattened into content, drowning in noise. Against the feeling that what he loved most didn't matter anymore.
So he spends his time committing small acts of defiance. Finding things he genuinely believes matter and sharing them. A film that cuts deeper than it should. A song that somehow knew something about you before you knew it about yourself. A book that rewires how you think. A recipe that tastes like care. A joke that lands exactly right.
He doesn't curate what's popular. He curates what's true, at least true to him, and hopefully true to you too. Not because it will change anything. But because we still have the free will to decide for ourselves
Steep is what happens when someone decides the algorithm doesn't own him. We are not here to be fed AI slop that they want you to see, We are here to produce culture that reflects the human experience in a way only another human can understand.
